Geelong is a rapidly growing city - with an enviably-placed city centre, natural geography, good public services and amenities, and, a fascinating industrial history. Once called the “Pivot” for its shipping geography, Geelong is presently changing in a significant way through economic conditions, a retooling to design and service industries (away from manufacturing), and, a general realisation of how well-situated it is in Victoria.

We believe this is worth integrating/grappling with the context of Geelong and change through good design – we use a participatory process, involving clients closely in the process, and analysing and visiting the site to find an old versus new approach together. We aim to set the existing house in a respectful relief by selecting materials, lines, shapes and forms – and also opening up new additions to new uses and contemporary ways of living. These projects are interesting, challenging and rewarding. The aesthetic and functional outcomes can be impressive and are well worth the investment.

The Central Geelong suburbs in the North and West, like West Geelong, North Geelong, Hamlyn Heights, Norlane, Bell Park and North Shore - have areas with many notable styles typical of Victorian heritage. These include Miner’s Cottage, Victorian, Georgian, and Federation, examples with Art Deco features from the 1920s-1930s, weatherboard Californian Bungalows, and also post-war brick, weatherboard or fibre cement houses using designs (adapted) from the original Public Works department or early developers. At Here Studio we have completed over 200 projects including a full variety of building styles and types.

Bringing Here Studio’s architectural services to Geelong comes off the back of teaching, research, and reflection on previous projects we have completed in the area – such as in the City Centre, Portarlington, Clifton Springs, Geelong West and Geelong North, Hamlyn Heights and Torquay. It is also about translating our experience – particularly with heritage renovations and extensions to homes for clients in Ballarat.

Our strengths are in assisting clients to use the design process as a way of prioritising their vision according to different factors – ie time, budget and personal values. We draw on local relationships to do so, including a senior team member in Norlane, and best practice thinking about Environmental Sustainable Architecture Design.

We regularly work in Geelong and can be available for a site visit, a meeting at the Geelong office or a chat over a coffee during business hours.
